AST: A library for modelling and manipulating coordinate systems

Abstract: In view of increased interest in object-oriented systems for describing coordinate information, we present a description of the data model used by the Starlink AST library. AST provides a comprehensive range of facilities for attaching world co-ordinate systems to astronomical data, and for retrieving and interpreting that information in a variety of formats, including FITS-WCS. AST is a mature system that has been in use for more than 17 years, and may consequently be useful as a means of informing developmen… Show more

“…For each image in the sequence, we compute the monochromatic DAR using Equation (12) of Gubler & Tytler (1998). The refco function from the Starlink AST C library (Berry et al 2016) is used to calculate the refraction constants A and B given the relative humidity, temperature, and pressure measured at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) weather station 4 at the time of the exposure and the NIRC2 K s central wavelength of 2.146 μm. 5 For the zenith separation, we project the angular distance between PZ Tel A and B for each individual frame onto its zenith axis determined prior to DAR correction.…”

“…In order to overcome these issues, we make use of Unity's native code plugin system. A C++ data analysis plugin is used to efficiently perform compute-intensive tasks in parallel using OpenMP, while wrapper plugins were used to interface with scientific libraries such as CFITSIO (Pence, 1999) and AST (Berry et al, 2016).…”

“…In France, the Terapix project also needed to manage distortion, and Emanuel Bertin wrote SCAMP [35] to produce a distortion correction to an image's WCS. WCSTools includes subroutines to decode all of these distortion methods (see Table 2), and the AST library [36], IRAF [18], and Astrometry.net [37] implement some of them.…”
