Asthma symptoms, interactive physical play and behavioral and academic outcomes in urban children with persistent asthma

Abstract: Urban children with moderate-severe asthma partake in less IPP, which is associated with socio-emotional and academic outcomes. Further efforts are needed to optimize asthmatic children's participation in IPP.

“…Compared to students with no or controlled asthma, young people with uncontrolled asthma were either found to perform poorly academically[5,15] or showed no discernible difference in their performance. [16] One study of twins showed no difference in performance on school assessments at 15–16 years for the twin with asthma compared to the twin without asthma. [17] The influence of asthma on adolescents completing high school has been little studied.…”

“…Although the studies we outlined above found a negative impact on grades as a result of asthma, Bhagat et al (2018) found no significant link between the presence of mild asthma and moderate/severe asthma in children aged 4 to 10 and reading or maths skills (p=0.917 for reading and p=0.330 for maths). However, the authors did not compare these results with those of non-asthmatic children, so it is unclear if this difference would be significant.…”

“…however, there are differing data on whether, or to what extent, this link is statistically significant. There are also some limitations to these studies, such as skewed study populations (Jones, DeWalt et al 2017;Nilsson, Odling et al 2018;Ruijsbroek, Wijga et al 2015), studies conducted on specific populations and locations, making it difficult to generalise to other groups (Bhagat, Fagnano et al 2018;Jones, DeWalt et al 2017), some missing data (Ruijsbroek, Wijga et al 2015) and some data that is self-reported (Bhagat, Fagnano et al 2018).…”

“…Children with ADHD have been shown to be shy, insecure, and impulsive, have a low frustration tolerance, and a low level of perseveration due to fatigue. This compendium of characteristics makes it difficult for the patient to adhere to treatment, which in turn leads to an increase in symptoms and their severity and therefore to a poorer quality of life [ 4 , 6 , 21 ].…”
