Atrial electromechanical duration prolongs in patients with erectile dysfunction

Abstract: Background: It is well known that erectile dysfunction (ED) is associated with increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) development. On the other hand, prolongation of the duration of atrial electromechanical delay (AEMD) is known to be a precursor for AF development. We aimed to evaluate AEMD in patients with ED patients without documented AF. Methods: Total of 68 outpatients with previously documented vascular ED and 44 participants without ED were enrolled to the current study. Sixty-eight patients with E… Show more

“…Although ED occurs due to multifactorial reasons, usually underlying pathology is the endothelial dysfunction [4]. Since the atheroma plaques form and endothelial dysfunction begins in capillaries first, the presence of ED is suggested as an early warning of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) [5,6]. Furthermore, many studies proved that the ED and CVD have a common pathophysiological basis as vascular insufficiency [7,8].…”

“…Erectile dysfunction (ED) is portrayed as lasting deficiency to achieve or sustain penile erection in accomplished vaginal penetration and is a major problem affecting the quality of life in men (Altunkol, Topuz, Genç, Alma, & Topuz, ). In the common population, the incidence of ED in men aged 40–80 years ranges from 30% to 65% (Eryilmaz, Kaplan, Aslan, Demir, & Taken, ).…”
