Atrial fibrillation and early clinical outcomes after mitral valve surgery in patients with rheumatic vs. non-rheumatic mitral stenosis

Abstract: Background:Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia after open heart surgery that can lead to early morbidity and mortality following operation. Mitral stenosis (MS) is a structural abnormality of the mitral valve apparatus that can be resulted from previous rheumatic fever or non-rheumatic fever such as congenital mitral stenosis, malignant carcinoid disease etc. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that type of mitral stenosis can affect the incidence, duration and frequency of AF pos… Show more

“…Histological changes of atrial myocardium in patients with DMS remain unknown, although atrial remodeling in patients with RMS is characterized as loss of atrial myocardium with scar, which is associated with conduction abnormality and inducibility of AF [20]. Interestingly, Mirhosseini et al [21] reported that the incidence of postoperative AF after mitral valve replacement in the DMS group was significantly lower than that in RMS group. Collectively, these findings indicated that the atrial remodeling in patients with DMS might be less severe than that in patients with RMS.…”

“…Bu hasta grubunda travma, inflamasyon, elektrolit bozuklukları, hemodinamik stresin yanında kardiyopulmoner bypass süresi ve klemplenme süresi de AF gelişiminde etkili olmaktadır. Kardiyopulmoner bypass uygulanmayan kalp ameliyatlarında AF'nin daha az görüldüğü belirtilmektedir 31,32,33 .…”
