ATRP of MMA under 60Co γ‐irradiation at room temperature

Abstract: In this work, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully carried out at room temperature (25 °C) under 60Co γ‐irradiation environment. The polymerization proceeded smoothly with high conversion (>90%) within 7 h. The polymerizations kept the features of controlled radical polymerization: first‐order kinetics, well‐predetermined number‐average molecular weights (Mn,GPC), and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.25). 1H NMR spectroscope and matrix‐assist… Show more

“…The surface grafting can be simply tuned by the dose of radiation [180]. Radiation grafting on polymer surfaces is also compatible with RDRP for high density and welldefined polymer grafts [181][182][183][184]. Polymer surfaces can also be modified using electron and ion beams [185,186].…”

“…The copolymer composition from the 1 H NMR spectrum is based on integrations of protons (5) (8 units, integration equal to 1) and protons (1), (3), (4), and (6). The contributions of protons (1) and (6) are known from integration of protons (5).…”

“…Conversion of A, which is more reactive (consumed faster) was a function of the [A] 0 /[B] 0 ratio. After the required time, the copolymer/monomer mixture was cooled down to the room temperature and dissolved in D 2 O or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-d 6 . As the double bonds of A and B are well separated in 1 H NMR, conversion of a given monomer was established by comparing the integrals of the CH 3 protons, taken as an internal standard, (do not change) and of the integrals of the double bond of the A or B, respectively.…”
