Accounting for people is the first step of every manpower-based organization in today's world. Hence, it takes up a signification amount of energy and value in the form of money from respective organizations for both implementing a suitable system for manpower management as well as maintaining that same system. Although this amount of expenditure for big organizations is near to nothing, rather just a formality, it does not hold as much truth for small organizations such as schools, colleges, and even universities to a certain degree. This is the first point. The second point for discussion is that much work has been done to solve this issue. Various technologies like Biometrics, RFID, Bluetooth, GPS, QR Code, etc., have been used to tackle the issues of attendance collection. This study paves the path for researchers by reviewing practical methods and technologies used for existing attendance systems.

Abstract. This paper reviews attendance management systems (AMS). An AMS (semi) automatically identifies the students in the classroom and makes report on attendees and absentees. A biometrics-based AMS identifies students by reading fingerprints or irises. A radio-frequency-identification (RFID)-based AMS recognizes a student by reading the unique RFID carried by the student. Each recognition method has some advantages and disadvantages. The most common disadvantage of AMSs is that special devices are required. For example, a RFID-based AMS requires RFID readers. After investigating existing AMSs, this paper proposes an AMS that does not require any additional devices as long as every student carries a smartphone and the wireless local network is available in the classroom.

Mobile application technology has been at the forefront of technological advancement in recent years. This has made life easier, and tasks that were considered herculean have been made easier and executable in a much shorter time than ever. One of such tasks is the process of taking attendance during events (such as lectures and conferences) by scribbling one’s signature and other personal details on a central register. This manual process is cumbersome and inconvenient, especially when a large number of participants are involved. To address this problem, this paper presents an automated solution in which a Java-based mobile application was developed and connected wirelessly to a central database that was created using My structured query language (MySQL) application whose task, among others, was to record attendance information. The database was connected to the backend of the web-based software program which was coded in hypertext pre-processor (PHP) programming language. Authentication was achieved through username, password, and fingerprint information. The system was deployedin a university to log students’ details, time absent, time present and cumulative attendances per month and it was realised that the system was highly effective, efficient and 5 times faster than the conventional paper-based attendance logging technique.
