Attenuation of coda waves and Q c value beneath the Chengdu telemetered seismic network

Abstract: Based on the single scattering model of coda power spectrum analysis, digital waveform data of 50 events recorded by the real-time processing system of the Chengdu telemetry network are analyzed to estimate the Qc values of earth medium beneath the Chengdu telemetry network for several specified frequencies. It is found that the Qc shows the frequency dependency in the form of Qc = Q0f" in the range of 1.0 to 20.0Hz. Estimated Q0 ranges from 60.83 to 178.05, and n is found to be 0.713 to 1.159. The average val… Show more

“…In this study, the single scattering model for coda waves is used. Seismic wave attenuation studies in the world by single scattering model show good correlation with the seismicity of the regions (ZENG et al, 1997;TITZSCHKAU et al, 2010;MOHANTY et al, 2009;PAUL et al, 2003;SHARMA et al, 2008). This is the first study of coda wave attenuation which uses a single back-scattering model along the EAFZ.…”

“…The qualify factor in the anelastic attenuation function, Q(f)=Q 0 f n , is obtained from fitting based on S-or coda waves. Many studies concerning the qualify factor of Sichuan have been published [18][19][20][21][22], in which Hua et al particularly present two qualify factors, 206.7f 0.836 and 274.6f 0.423 , for the plain and mountain region of Sichuan province separately. Considering the working area of the study, the qualify factor, 274.6f 0.423 , was applied.…”

“…where UGO and y are constants, then E, p1 and p2 can be regarded as constants, approximately. Under these approximations, the wave-packet theory can be applied (for details of the application of this theory in QG dynamics, one can refer to the work of Zeng (1983) and Tung (1983)). According to this theory, the dispersion relation of a wave packet with wave number peaking around k and n in the linearized SWSG model is are group velocities in the x and y directions respectively.…”

“…In this section, we first study the slowly (spatial) varying constant-shear basic-flow case by using the wave-packet method (e.g. Zeng 1983) and then the general case by the numerical method. The relative importance of regular normal-mode and continuous-spectrum disturbances in a (unstable) cosine-type basic flow are compared under some special initial conditions.…”
