Attenuation of diabetic nephropathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats by Punica granatum Linn. leaves extract

Abstract: With an objective to develop Complementary and Alternative Medicine for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy, the present study investigated the protective effects of methanolic extract of Punica granatum leaves (MPGL) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy. Diabetic nephropathy has become a leading cause of end stage renal failure worldwide. P. granatum, due to its anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities may retard the progression of diabetic nephropathy. In this study, diabetes w… Show more

“…RRE and RC significantly lower renal hypertrophy in the treated diabetic rats. Increased expression of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF‐β1) in the glomerular mesangial and proximal convoluted tubules cells of the kidney plays a vital role in the onset and progression of renal hypertrophy (Mestry, Dhodi, Kumbhar, & Juvekar, ). RRE and RC reduced kidney index in diabetic rats.…”

“…voluted tubules cells of the kidney plays a vital role in the onset and progression of renal hypertrophy(Mestry, Dhodi, Kumbhar, & Juvekar, 2017). RRE and RC reduced kidney index in diabetic rats.Histological analysis of the kidney tissues indicated extensive damages to the kidney tissues of diabetic rats as observed by leukocytes infiltration, distorted architecture of kidney tissues.…”

“…Creatinine, uric acid and urea are the major biomarkers utilized of renal failing. The increment in these indices are potential pathological indicators of DN development 33 . Damaging in the renal tissue was evident with the elevation of these markers in serum of diabetic animals presented in this work.…”
