“…Our analysis, based on survey data that covers 1475 national and regional legislators in 9 European countries, supports the hypothesis that dual mandate-holders are more likely to adopt a local focus of representation, especially stressing the municipal level. Whereas many studies found limited evidence for the impact of individual characteristics and backgrounds on legislators' role perceptions (Brack et al 2012;Dudzinska et al 2014), suggesting that roles are rather shaped by institutional features, our study shows to the contrary that individual dual mandate-holders subjectively feel close to their local constituents. Notwithstanding their subjective aspirations, dual office-holders appear to struggle to behave accordingly.…”
