Attractiveness of Parboiled Rice Hulls to the Fungus Gnat, Bradysia sp. nr coprophila (Diptera: Sciaridae), Adult Relative to Standard Growing Medium Components

Abstract: This study was conducted to assess the attractiveness of growing media containing parboiled rice hulls (PBH) to fungus gnat, Bradysia sp. nr. coprophila (Diptera: Sciaridae), adults. In comparing commercially prepared PBH with peatmoss (LC1) and pine bark (SB200)-based growing media, it was established that the fungus gnat adults were not specifically attracted to any of the growing media, even those containing PBH, with the mean proportion of fungu… Show more

“…In experiment II, the total number of fruits produced by CR and YC increased by 41% and 32%, respectively, in plants grown under L-8 compared to H-16. Furthermore, the total number of fruits produced by CR were also higher under H-12 (46) compared to L-8 (34). Similarly, the total number of fruits produced by YC plants grown under H-16 (82) were higher than those under L-12 (59).…”

“…Flies in the genus Bradysia (Diptera: Sciaridae), the darkwing fungus gnats, can be severe pests of ornamental and vegetable greenhouse production systems [33, 34]. Female Bradysia impatiens are more attracted to geranium seedlings infected with several plant-pathogenic Pythium spp.…”

“…Sixteen uniform seedlings of all cultivars were selected to be used in each experimental run, and were planted as one seedling per 8 inch diameter (20.3 cm) 'azalea' plastic container (3.1 L) (BWI; Nash, TX, USA) and filled with the same substrate described above. A 2.5 cm layer of parboiled rice hulls (Sungro; Agawam, MA, USA) was applied to the substrate surface of each container to minimize complications with fungus gnats [15]. Periodical applications of biological control products such as NemaShield ® were used as preventative measures for pest control.…”
