Atypical MEG inter-subject correlation during listening to continuous natural speech in dyslexia

Abstract: AbstractListening to speech elicits brain activity time-locked to the speech sounds. This so-called neural entrainment to speech was found to be atypical in dyslexia, a reading impairment associated with neural speech processing deficits. We hypothesized that the brain responses of dyslexic vs. normal readers to real-life speech would be different, and thus the strength of inter-subject correlation (ISC) would differ from that of typical readers and be reflected in reading-rela… Show more

“…7, sensors with higher ISC were located near the visual and audio cortices, which reportedly displayed high ISC during movie watching in previous studies 14,32–34 . In particular, the high ISC predominantly occurred in the delta, theta, and alpha bands, consistent with previous studies 14,33,34 . Together, the dataset demonstrated good validity in detecting ISC.…”

“…In a sample of children and adolescents spanning ages 7–21 years, Gruskin et al (2020) report that patterns and severity of depression symptoms are linked to brain responses during an emotionally evocative animated clip, but only in adolescents, suggesting that these idiosyncratic responses emerge over the course of development. Finally, in a study of individuals with dyslexia, ISC calculated from MEG envelope time series correlated with similarity in phonological processing, technical reading, and working memory ( Thiede et al, 2019 ). Encouragingly, these studies show that there is meaningful—i.e., behaviorally relevant—structure in idiosyncratic responses to naturalistic stimuli.…”

“…ISC is a simple yet effective way to reliably extract the shared brain responses to complex naturalistic stimuli across individuals 58 . ISC was originally developed for fMRI data analysis but has also been applied to other neuroimaging modalities such as EEG [94][95][96][97][98] , MEG [99][100][101] .…”
