Audiologists should not fail with falls: A call to commit to prevention of falls in older adults

Abstract: Globally, falls are a serious economic and public health concern. While all age groups are impacted by falls, the threats to morbidity and mortality are most severe in older adults. Recent literature has linked hearing loss, and related issues such as an increase in sedentary behaviour, to a greater risk of falls. Therefore, this opinion article aims to raise audiologists’ awareness of falls in ageing patients or clients, and calls for change in terms of having these rehabilitation professionals embrace identi… Show more

“…As it has been clearly established in the past, audiologists are important professionals in the prevention of risk of falls 14,15 . Indeed, they closely work with population at high risks of falls, and also have the knowledge (auditory and vestibular) to identify, quantify and manage risk of falls.…”

“…Since such bone vibrators are widely available in a clinical audiology context (B-71), this method could therefore be of interest towards screening for risk of falls. This is particularly true since it has been shown that the prevalence of falls in an audiology clinic is higher than in the normal population (Criter et al 14 ; Rogers 15 ). However, to date, limitations prevent the generalization of the results of Bergin et al 12 .…”

“…Additionally, age-related hearing loss has been associated with declines in the vestibular sense, which plays a crucial role in balance [23]. Furthermore, slower gait speed, social isolation, and cognitive decline, which are correlated with hearing impairment in older adults, have been identified as additional factors relevant to an increased fall risk [3]. Understanding the impact of hearing loss on balance is crucial for physical therapists in developing effective interventions to mitigate the risk of falls in the elderly.…”
