Auditory Event-Related Potentials in Parkinson's Disease in Relation to Cognitive Ability

Abstract: Auditory event-related potentials were evaluated in 45 nondemented patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease and 40 matched normal controls. All patients were neuropsychologically assessed by means of the Raven Colored Progressive Matrices, four subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale (Digit Span Forward, Logical Memory, Visual Memory, Associate Learning), and the Wisconsin Card-sorting Test. The P300 component of the auditory event-related potentials was significantly prolonged in the patients with Par… Show more

“…Tsuchiya et al (2000) for example have found prolonged latency of P3a, but not of P3b in PD patients, concluding that the orienting response in PD patients was impaired. Prolongation of P3b latency has been found in other studies as well (Katsarou, Bostantjopoulou, Kimiskidis, Rossopoulos, & Kazis, 2004;Raudino, Garavaglia, Beretta, & Pellegrini, 1997;Tachibana, Aragane, Miyata, & Sugita, 1997). In a review of ERPs in different neurological conditions, Verleger (2003) concluded that the P3 latency tends to be prolonged in PD patients, particularly in those with overt cognitive decline.…”

“…In this task, a series of binaural tones at 70-dB sound pressure level (SPL) with a 10 ms rise/fall and a 100ms, plateau time was presented to all subjects. The auditory stimuli were presented in a random sequence with target tones of 2000Hz occurring 20% of the time and standard tones of 1000Hz occurring 80% of the time at a rate of 0.5Hz [25]. The subject was required to distinguish between the two tones by responding to the target (e.g.…”

“…The peak of the ERP components was determined as follows: if the waveform was smooth, the maximal amplitude point was taken as the peak. Otherwise, the leading and trailing slopes of the waveform were extended, and the intersection point was determined [25]. For the purpose of reduced impedance we used a special type of paste (Elefix Nihon-Kohden, EEG paste Z-401 CE), while the AERPs were analyzed by means of Neuropack 4 (NihonKohden, Tokyo) equipment.…”

“…In neurodegenerative diseases accompanied by dementia, weakening of memory, and disturbances of attention, the latency of the Р300 potential is greater than in the norm. This is why the parameters of this wave are extensively used in clinical studies as neurophysiological correlates of the state of cognitive functions [6,7].…”
