Augmented Reality for the Control Tower: The RETINA Concept

Abstract: Abstract. The SESAR (Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research) Joint Undertaking has recently granted the Resilient Synthetic Vision for Advanced Control Tower Air Navigation Service Provision project within the framework of the H2020 research on High Performing Airport Operations. Hereafter, we describe the project motivations, the objectives, the proposed methodology and the expected impacts, i.e. the consequences of using virtual/augmented reality technologies in the control tower.

“…Taking the strong connection to German ATC into account, the process of identifying different RTMs is not completed and has to be updated and extended to different procedures that exist throughout Europe’s different Air Navigation Service Providers. The necessity of this process is increased by the permanent transformation of air traffic control concepts, for example, the introduction of resilient synthetic vision to the tower (Masotti, Bagassi, & De Crescenzio, 2016).…”

“…To tackle this problem, the project Resilient Synthetic Vision for Advanced Control Tower Air Navigation Service Provision (RETINA) proposes the use augmented reality technologies [1]. It evaluates and challenges the different innovative solutions that can be applied in a control tower by using the Ecological Interface Design (EID).…”

“…Retina is a SESAR Horizon 2020 Exploratory Research European Project dealing with Augmented Reality for airport control towers. The project's main aim is to investigate the applicability and the potential benefits, with regard to safety and efficiency aspects, of Augmented Reality display techniques for the Air Traffic Control (ATC) service provision in the airport control tower [ [10]] [11][12] [13]. The first phase of the project was devoted to the selection of the display technology for the application and it was performed through the active participation of potential end users.…”
