Augmented Reality Lightfield Display for a Smart Window Using an Active Pinhole Array

Abstract: An augmented reality (AR) lightfield display can provide three-dimensional (3D) images at the locations of real objects. However, a conventional AR lightfield display has a few disadvantages in that its 3D resolution is poor and it is bulky in form owing to the use of an optical combiner or relay optics. In this paper, we propose a novel method to realize an AR lightfield display using a transparent display and an active pinhole array (APA) to enhance both the 3D resolution and visibility of real objects. An e… Show more

“…In addition, the uniformity of imaging intensity is better than 20%, and the image is clear without ghost images, which can effectively realise the fusion of the virtual image and the real environment. Park et al 100 . proposed using a transparent display and an active pinhole array (APA) to realise an AR lightfield display to increase 3D resolution and visibility of actual objects.…”

Park et al100 proposed using a transparent display and an active pinhole array (APA) to realise an AR lightfield display to increase 3D resolution and visibility of actual objects. Although the refresh rate and optical efficiency of APA are inversely proportional to the number of views due to time-multiplexing operations, the proposed system can complete a full screen within 40 ms and provide a commercial movie refresh rate.…”

“…The common method of implementing AR is a glasses-type head-mounted display (HMD) in which users see computer-generated content in real-world surroundings to facilitate real-time interaction. This technology could positively impact multiple aspects of our daily routines, including education, communication, training, driving, and entertainment [4][5][6]. Among the performance parameter of AR HMD, the focus cue and form factor are key parameters that directly affect the comfort of using and wearing [9,10].…”
