“…The water reaches the surface along fractures and fissures. The high CO 2 (2645 ± 203 mg/L) and HCO 3 − concentrations (813 ± 57 mg/L) [ Bräuer et al, ] allow carbonic acid to readily react with the rock during transport along fractures, dissolving minerals, therefore leading to the highly mineralized spring waters (total dissolved solids (TDS) up to 1.4 g/L) [ Koch et al, ; Koch and Heinicke , ].…”

“…However, the measured negative δ 56 Fe values do not always coincide with high discharge. Also, low discharge samples do not always have the most positive δ 56 Fe values, as would be expected from a simple mixing process of deep water (low Q and δ 56 Fe and high λ and TDS) with near‐surface water (high Q and δ 56 Fe and low λ and TDS) [ Koch et al, ; Koch and Heinicke , ]. We modeled the temporal change in δ 56 Fe in a binary mixing model of deep water with surface water constrained by the measured Fe concentrations and isotopic compositions and hydrological mixing parameters from Koch et al [].…”

“…Mean values of gas and water characteristics of the Wettinquelle, Bad Brambach, as observed before the seismically active period lasting from the end of August to the end of December 2000, are given in Table 1. According to our original plans the second monitoring campaign of the gas and isotope composition at Bad Brambach should have been carried out at the Eisenquelle again [ Weise et al , 2001; Bräuer et al , 2003], but because of the upcoming reconstruction of that spring we moved the sampling to the Wettinquelle where the reconstruction was already finished [ Koch et al , 2005]. The data of Table 1 demonstrate that the fluid signature of both mineral springs is similar.…”

“…The oxygen concentration is always lower than expected for dissolved air, which means that most of the oxygen has been consumed during circulation through the granite. On the other hand, variations of the oxygen concentrations were observed, which may indicate that the Wettinquelle is sensitive to hydraulic pressure fluctuations in the aquifer [ Koch et al , 2005]. Therefore, and because Ar and Ne isotope data that would allow distinguishing between dissolved and excess air portions were studied for selected samples only, the gas composition could not be corrected for air contributions.…”
