Capacity studies of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's Delta‐ Mendota Canal, the largest of the constructed canals of the California Central Valley Project, have revealed several unsuspected issues of large, concrete‐lined canals on flat grades. Some of this new information has already been applied in the design of the huge canal of the San Luis unit of the project, which is now under construction. In addition to proving that design methods must be adjusted for such canals, the studies, which involved dewatering, indicated that sedimentation and biologic growths significantly decrease canal capacity.
