Authoring Highly Generative Interactive Drama

Abstract: Abstract.Authoring non linear narratives is a difficult and challenging issue. In this paper we focus on the process of authoring with the IDtension system, an interactive drama system designed by one of the authors. We report an experiment of realizing a real-size scenario and start from this point to think about nonlinear narratives and the possibilities and limits of the IDtension writing tool. We introduce the linearization/delinearization cycle, as a basic principle of abstract interactive writing.

“…Abstraction has been identified as a key issue in authoring [20,21,23]. Although some forms of linear writing (such as screenwriting) involves a kind of abstract thinking, what characterizes generative writing is the fact that authors need to directly enter abstract data into the system.…”

“…Authoring such systems is quite difficult, not only because of a lack of user-friendly authoring tools, but also and more importantly because of inherent conceptual difficulties in handling the computational data needed to produce an interactive drama. The abstract nature of these data makes the authoring task particularly difficult [20,23].…”

“…We take examples of our own systems and authoring tools to illustrate these problems: IDtension [17,18], an interactive drama system that generates actions based on narrative principles, Scenejo [12], a character-centric conversational storytelling system based on conversing chatbots, and Rencontre [10], a fragment-based writing / reading system with dynamically generated hyperlinks. To complement the data, we also present feedback found in literature, since the goal is not to blame one specific tool but to generalize the issues.…”

“…Authoring is one of the main issue in Interactive Drama [12,21,23], since the complexity of current approaches and tools has prevented authors from writing compelling stories.…”
