Automated Carotid IMT Measurement and Its Validation in Low Contrast Ultrasound Database of 885 Patient Indian Population Epidemiological Study: Results of AtheroEdge® Software

Abstract: Aim The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the usage of an automated computer-based IMT measurement system called - CALEX 3.0 (a class of patented AtheroEdge™ software) on a low contrast and low resolution image database acquired during an epidemiological study from India. The image contrast was very low with pixel density of 12.7 pixels/mm. Further, to demonstrate the accuracy and reproducibility of the AtheroEdge™ software system we compared it with the manual tracings of a vascular surgeon – considered as… Show more

“…The accuracy and reproducibility of all the five image‐based phenotypes were tested against the gold standard (an expert) and CT . The performance of a complete system that measured image‐based phenotypes has also been validated in our previous work . In this study, a nonlinear model was developed that considered an independent contribution of ethnicity, gender, artery type, age, HbA1c level, smoking, LDL‐C, and hypertension.…”

“…Technically, with a slight calibration change, the proposed AtheroEdge ™ software remained insensitive to the measurement of the five phenotypes . The automated carotid image phenotype measured by AtheroEdge ™ was validated against the gold standard (an expert) and CT . As part of the study, the image phenotypes were tested for reproducibility in our previous studies .…”

“…The polyline distance method (PDM) was first proposed by Suri for measuring small deviations in the borders of medical organs in the early 1990s and has become a classic method for wall measurements (Molinari et al 2010b(Molinari et al , 2012c(Molinari et al , 2012d. Given two boundaries B1 (say LI interface) and B2 (say MA interface), first the distance of the vertices of boundary B1 from the segments of boundary B2 is computed.…”

“…This gradient operator for LI detection is illustrated in Figure 1h. These interfaces are then captured and saved as a list of coordinate points that are then used for computation of cIMT using the standard polyline distance method adapted by Suri (Molinari et al 2010b(Molinari et al , 2012c(Molinari et al , 2012d.…”
