“…The relationship also differed from the relationship in Thorsen and Kjesbu (2001), which consisted of a power curve through the data, whereas in the present study, there was an exponential regression line. Friedland et al (2005) concluded that the relationship between follicle size and density in American shad (Alosa sapidissima) was too imprecise to provide useful fecundity estimates. They suggested that the poor precision may be due to their sample handling and preservation technique but also may reflect species differences in ovarian development and ovarian anatomy, which may be why there is a difference between the relationship for the present study and that of Thorsen and Kjesbu (2001).…”

“…Previous fecundity studies have used Gilson's to preserve the ovaries and break down the ovarian tissue (Nash et al 2000;Friedland et al 2005), whereas during the present study, we use formaldehyde. Gilson's is a digestive fluid that is much more toxic and causes greater shrinkage in follicle size than formaldehyde.…”

“…These oocytes were in the vitellogenic stage where they have a brownish colour and therefore easily stand out from a bright background in contrast to fertilized eggs which are transparent. Friedland et al (2005) developed an image analysis method for scanned images of fish eggs in Petri dishes. This method first transfixes the eggs in a polymer before they are scanned.…”

“…The main problem with alcohol solutions such as 70% EtOH (EtOH-70), which is one of the most common preservatives of animal tissue, is that they can cause severe tissue dehydration and could thus be inappropriate for methods that require accurate measurements of gonad and/or oocyte size. Moreover, other ethanol-based, formalin-free protocols such as the toxic Gilson's fluid or its modified non-toxic alternative proposed by Friedland et al (2005), which are used to separate oocytes from ovarian tissue for fecundity measurements, were also shown to cause significant oocyte shrinkage (Friedland et al, 2005;Klibansky & Juanes, 2007).…”
