Automatic Rebar Estimation Algorithms for Integrated Project Delivery

Abstract: Integrated project delivery is advantageous in that it can reflect the constructor's expertise at the design phase. Furthermore, integrated project delivery allows project stockholders to promptly evaluate the financial performance of design decisions. However, there are many problems among existing quantity estimation processes, including human error, loss of information during data exchange and import-export, and time delays. These problems are major obstructions to the application of integrated project deli… Show more

“…It is well known that quantity takeoff in different regions is usually carried out according to a specific construction classification system [22]. Because quantity takeoff rules and methods of compiling quantity bills are discrepant based on different construction classification systems, the accurate mapping between BIM data and a construction classification system plays an important role in the whole process of quantity takeoff [23]. To implement this mapping between BIM data and construction classification system, a method (the BQTCM method) is proposed in this paper.…”

“…Choi et al proposed a BIM-based calculation process of structural component quantities in the early design stage [22]. Lim et al developed an automatic algorithm for the calculation of reinforcement quantities [23]. Moreover, a variety of BIM-based software has been developed to improve the efficiency of cost estimation [4].…”

“…Liu et al (2015Liu et al ( , 2018 reported an automatic system to generate the boarding layout of drywalls in a BIM model with the lowest material waste. Lim et al (2016) proposed an automatic algorithm to calculate quantities of rebar from 3D structural models. Cho and Chun (2015) developed a method that integrates quantity takeoff logics and data mining techniques to estimate quantities of reinforced concrete structures based on BIM models.…”

“…IPD integrates all project stakeholders into the evaluation of the financial performance of design decisions. An IPD arrangement sees all parties attuned to the overall project benefits from the design phase, leading to fewer modifications and queries – which minimizes waste, rework costs and RFIs (request for informations) – at later stages (Lim et al ., 2016). IPD targets cost overruns, delays and improved project performance.…”
