Automatic Recognition Methods Supporting Pain Assessment: A Survey

Abstract: Pain is a complex phenomenon, involving sensory and emotional experience, that is often poorly understood, especially in infants, anesthetized patients, and others who cannot speak. Technology supporting pain assessment has the potential to help reduce suffering; however, advances are needed before it can be adopted clinically. This survey paper assesses the state of the art and provides guidance for researchers to help make such advances. First, we overview pain's biological mechanisms, physiological and beha… Show more

“…Pain is an undesired feeling that can produce a wide range of responses: from mild, localized ache to distress [1][2][3]. Despite its displeasure, it is one of the vital body alarm systems, as it allows the subject to recognize stimuli of potentially harmful intensities [4].…”

“…In contrast to short-lasting acute pain, chronic pain persists even after the cessation of the initial cause and often loses its protective value [1,4,6]. By definition, chronic pain lasts over 3-6 months [7] and is not solved with treatment [8].…”

“…Although several commercially devices [2,8,9], as well as newly researched principles [10,11], are currently available and clinically evaluated in many trials, no monitor is widely and routinely used for analgesia assessment [12]. Hence, what differentiates Anspec-pro from the other available devices is the mathematical formalism for parametric modelling of time-frequency variations of skin impedance values [13].…”
