Automatic Restoration of Diacritics for Igbo Language

Abstract: Abstract. Igbo is a low-resource African language with orthographic and tonal diacritics, which capture distinctions between words that are important for both meaning and pronunciation, and hence of potential value for a range of language processing tasks. Such diacritics, however, are often largely absent from the electronic texts we might want to process, or assemble into corpora, and so the need arises for effective methods for automatic diacritic restoration for Igbo. In this paper, we experiment using an … Show more

“…Our earlier work on Igbo diacritic restoration (Ezeani et al, 2016) was more of a proof of concept aimed at extending the initial work done by Scannell (2011). We built a number of n-gram models -basically unigrams, bigrams and trigrams -along with simple smoothing techniques.…”

“…The results of our experiments are shown in the Tables 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 3 . We did not use Word Error Rate (WER) and Diacritics Error rate (DER) since they are introduced as accuracy calculated for words and single diacritics, respectively.…”

“…In Vietnamese and Igbo, there are words that differ in diacritics only, but have extremely different meanings. So, for example, the paper [3] reports the following chain: akwà (cloth),àkwà (bed/bridge),ákwá (cry),àkwá (egg).…”

“…Several other models used the lexical lookup (or dictionaries) as default and other methods to handle cases outside the dictionaries. A similar approach was taken in Ezeani, Hepple and Onyenwe (2016) in the diacritic restoration of Igbo with backward replacement that could overwrite the diacritic form predicted for previous word if the bigram strongly suggest a better replacement.…”
