Abstract: The aim of this paper is to compare and analyse the availability of blogs and news links from the three most important altmetric data providers (Altmetric.com, PlumX and Crossref Event Data, CED). In addition, the study explores the distribution of events by creation year in order to observe the coverage of old and new events. “… Blog citations count (usually) scientific blogs translating research papers for a general audience (Shema et al ., 2015). This is probably a public interest indicator (Shema et al ., 2014) that can be generated by automated search engine queries and filtering, to a limited extent. News citations count news stories in specified news websites that cite a given academic journal (Kousha and Thelwall, 2019) or papers (Ortega, 2019). This is a public or media interest indicator that can be generated by automated search engine queries and filtering.…”

“…There are several competing companies which track and transform altmetrics including: Plum Analytics (PlumX), Altmetrics, ImpactStory and more. Data produced by Altmetric are more accurate long-term whilst PlumX metrics are more accurate when articles have zero-reads or one-read-only, as measured by Mendeley 26,27 . We decided that long-term count accuracy was most important so elected to use Altmetrics, although researchers should consider extracting data from both Altmetric and PlumX platforms for comparison.…”

“…This list was extended from 4,000 sites to more than 10,000 blogs thanks to an agreement with ACI Scholarly Blog Index in 2016 ( Parkhill, 2016 ). However, this company ceased trading and many links were broken ( Ortega, 2019b ). Altmetric.com has always curated an own list of roughly 15,000 blogs ( Altmetric.com, 2020b ), although this information is not publicly available.…”

“…This collaboration makes possible that Altmetric.com gathers mentions from more than 80,000 news outlets, in addition to the list of 1,300 news already curated by its own service ( Williams, 2015 ). However, Lexis-Nexis acquired this company in 2014 and the collaboration ended, leaving 19% of the links inactive ( Ortega, 2019b ). Now, Altmetric.com monitor more than 5,000 news outlets ( Altmetric.com, 2020b ).…”
