Plants are prone to various biotic stresses in nature by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, harmful insects and weeds. The biggest percentage loss (70%) in plants is attributed to insects. Lepidoptera is one such diversified phytophagous insect group, which include Helicoverpa armigera, a key pest of many food crops including chickpea, pigeonpea, pea, lentil, chillies, sunflower, tomato, tobacco and cotton. Controlling this insect has been a big task for farmers leading to the manufacture of a plethora of pesticides. However, over reliance on chemical pesticides has resulted in problems including safety risks, environmental contamination, outbreaks of secondary pests, insecticide resistance and decrease in biodiversity. Hence, there is an urgent need for the development of eco-friendly methods such as entomopathogens, antagonist or competitor populations of a third organism and botanicals to suppress H. armigera. Also, many compounds from microorganisms have been found to be effective in crop production, and these have a role in controlling H. armigera. The actinomycetes play an astounding role in controlling the key plant pathogens. They are the representative genera of higher microbial mass in the soil. Numerous studies have shown that these productive actino-bacteria can generate an impressive array of secondary metabolites such as antibiotics, antitumor agents, insecticides etc. This review emphasizes the mechanism behind resistance to insecticides along with actinomycetes and its potential as a biocontrol agent against H. armigera.

RESUMOO objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar, em casa de vegetação, o efeito de diferentes produtos nematicidas no tratamento de sementes de algodão visando ao controle de R. reniformis. Para tanto, foram utilizados os produtos Imidacloprid, Clothianidin, Thiametoxam, Abamectin, Thiodicarb + Imidacloprid e Thiodicarb, sozinhos ou em mistura. A inoculação com 2.000 juvenis + ovos + fêmeas imaturas/vaso de R. reniformis foi feita concomitantemente ao plantio das sementes (cvs. Fibermax 966 e IAC 25 tratadas e não tratadas). Após 22 e 44 dias da inoculação, foram tomadas medidas de altura de plantas, massa fresca do sistema radicular, massa seca da parte aérea, número de nematoides no interior das raízes e multiplicação do nematoide. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que o tratamento de sementes com Thiodicarb + Imidacloprid, Thiodicarb + Imidacloprid + Clothianidin, Thiodicarb 350 e Thiametoxam 350 FS + Abamectin 500 FS, foram eficientes para a proteção das raízes contra a penetração das formas infestantes de R. reniformis. ABSTRACT SEED TREATMENT FOR THE CONTROL OF ROTYLENCHULUS RENIFORMIS ON TWO COTTON CULTIVARS.The objective of this work was to evaluate, under greenhouse conditions, the effect of different nematicides in the treatment of cotton seed for the control of Rotylenchulus reniformis. The products Imidacloprid, Clothianidin, Thiametoxam, Abamectin, Thiodicarb + Imidacloprid, and Thiodicarb were used. Nematode inoculation with 2,000 juveniles + eggs + immature females of R. reniformis per pot was carried out concomitantly with seed sowing (cvs. Fibermax 966 and IAC 25 treated and non-treated). After 22 and 44 days from the inoculation, evaluations were made of the plant height, fresh root weight, dry top weight, nematode number in the roots and nematode multiplication. The results showed that seed treatment with Thiodicarb + Imidacloprid, Thiodicarb + Imidacloprid + Clothianidin, Thiodicarb 350 and Thiametoxam 350 FS + Abamectin 500 FS were effective to protect roots against R. reniformis penetration.

Organophosphorus insecticides are widely used in industry, agriculture, horticulture, domestic, and for public health applications. The consumption of insecticides in the household has almost risen exponentially. Over this half century there has been a significant increase in developmental disorders observed in humans which are thought to have an association with the exposure to pesticides in home environment causing family stress. In addition, abamectin as biocide is recently used as an insecticide. Very little information is available with regard to the sub-lethal effects of abamectin; therefore, the purpose of this work is to compare the toxicity of abamectin as a biocide with malathion and dimethoate as organophosphorus insecticides using the earthworm (Lumbricus terrestirs) as a biomarker. The earthworm was exposed to the tested compound in artificial soil for 7 days. The LC 50 of these insecticides was determined. The effects of two concentrations (LC 50 & LC 25 ) of these insecticides were studied on the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), acid and alkaline phosphatases (AcP & AlP), and the levels of the two neurotransmitters; gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) and L-glutamic acid. The data showed that the LC 50 of abamectin, dimethoate and malathion was 2.99, 13.7, and 39.69 mg/ kg, respectively. This means that abamectin was the most toxic, while malathion was the least toxic. Both LC 50 & LC 25 concentrations of dimethoate and malathion had significant inhibitory effect on the AChE activity, while abamectin had significant excitatory effects. AcP and AlP activities were significantly increased with the LC 50 and LC 25 of all the tested insecticides. GST induction activity was significant by the treatment of dimethoate and malathion, while there was significant decrease after treatment with LC 50 of abamectin. But there was a non-significant difference with LC 25 of abamectin. The lethal and sub-lethal concentrations of the tested insecticides caused a significant induction in GABA and L-glutamic acid concentrations. The data showed that abamectin has the highest effect on the concentration of GABA and L-glutamic acid while dimethoate had the lowest effect. From these results, it could be concluded that abamectin had toxic effect compared to the tested organophosphorus insecticides, also the earthworm can be considered a good sensitive biomarker to test the toxicity of different compounds.
