“…Contrary to the interpretation of Cumming (1964), the author believes that the condition described in detail by Newton and Simmons (1963), in which a transmissible embryolethal virus was isolated but not identified, was a case of IB nephritis. The clinical signs were well described by Hungerford (1969) and it is clear that, following a brief respiratory phase, general signs appear consisting of anorexia, diarrhoea, dehydration, cyanosis, depression and eventually death from renal failure.…”

“…A more satisfactory account is available from Newton and Simmons (1963) who reported a serious outbreak of respiratory symptoms followed by nephritis in birds up to 9 weeks of age; they described enlargement of the kidneys and distension of the ureters with urates. Histological examination showed some degree of tubular degeneration and lesions of both acute and chronic interstitial nephritis.…”

“…Seven additional IBV strains, Ql/61, Ql/63, Ql/64, Ql/65, Q2/66, Ql/67 and Ql/69 isolated between 1961 and 1969, were therefore used in this study to obtain more comprehensive information on the antigenic diversity of strains predominating on commercial sites before the introduction of vaccination. These seven strains (Table 1) were selected from a collection of seventeen strains deposited in the Australian Reference Collection by G. R. Simmons (Newton & Simmons, 1963). Except for the date and place of isolation, other records are not available for these strains.…”
