“…HBO therapy is not without risks and morbidity (Table II), and middle ear barotrauma(barotitis media) is a common side effect of this treatment modality 3 . Barotitis media is caused by a relative negative middle ear pressure (vs. atmospheric or dive chamber pressure), subsequent closure of the eustachian tube, tympanic membrane retraction, fluid extravasation into the middle ear space, blood vessel rupture, and ultimately tympanic membrane perforation 4,5 . Fernau et al 6 reported a 100% incidence of middle ear barotrauma in the presence of eustachian tube dysfunction during HBO therapy.…”
