Avoiding digester imbalance through real-time expert system control of dilution rate

Abstract: Process control of anaerobic digesters is a particularly challenging problem because of the diversity of possible causes that can lead to digester imbalance. Conventional control schemes can fail in consequence of a reversal in the sign of the steady-state gain caused by some type of disturbance. In this work we present an expert system approach that takes into account the particularity of this process. The developed algorithm is demonstrated to compensate successfully for changes in the digester feed medium w… Show more

“…The CH 4 and CO 2 percentage can be measured using gas chromatographic methods or infrared measurements. The use of methane production as a process output for control is commonly employed (Renard et al, 1988(Renard et al, , 1991Ryhiner et al, 1992;Boscolo et al, 1993;Polihronakis, Petrou, and Deligiannis, 1993;Ryhiner, Heinzle, and Dunn, 1993;Chynoweth et al, 1994;Ehlinger et al, 1994;Moletta et al, 1994;Pullammanappallil et al, 1991Pullammanappallil et al, , 1992Pullammanappallil et al, , 1998. “…Toxins in feed can inhibit microbial populations and lower biogas and methane production rate. On-line process control and optimization techniques to reject disturbances, usually monitor methane production rate (or methane composition) as a measured variable (Pullammanappallil, 1991(Pullammanappallil, ,1998Chynoweth, 1994;Polag, 2015;Lara-Cisneros, 2015). Therefore, it is essential to monitor in real-time, on-line digester methane concentration and BFR.…”
