Awareness and knowledge of sepsis in the general Korean population: comparison with the awareness and knowledge of acute myocardial infarction and stroke

Abstract: ObjectivePatients with severe sepsis or septic shock require timely, aggressive management to improve their outcomes, and early presentation of patients to the hospital may also be important. Thus, public awareness about sepsis may be important for improved outcomes. However, there are no studies regarding the public awareness of sepsis in the general Korean population. Therefore, the objective of this survey was to gain insight into the public awareness of sepsis.MethodsProspective paper-based and web-based s… Show more

“…Knowledge about early sepsis symptoms and the urge to seek emergency medical treatment are crucial to initiate early treatment, especially in major risk groups like the elderly or persons with comorbidities. To date, studies reveal substantial gaps in sepsis knowledge and perceptions in various countries [ 5 7 ]. In 2009, an international survey including 6021 participants from Europe and the USA revealed that 88% of the participants had never heard the term sepsis before [ 5 ].…”

“…The number was higher in Germany (53%) and in a similar survey from South Korea in 2013 (77%). However, only 22% and 35% of the Germans and Koreans, respectively, who had heard the term sepsis selected 1 acceptable definition from a list of options [ 10 , 12 ]. Not surprisingly, there are national variations, and the awareness in Sweden is as yet unknown.…”

“…The estimated incidence of severe sepsis in the US is 751,000 cases with 215,000 deaths annually [3]. In the Korea, public awareness of sepsis has been reported to be lower than that of other common medical diseases such as acute myocardial infarction and stroke [4]. Furthermore, the sepsis-related mortality rate was estimated to be around 30% in the Korea [5], and the number of deaths from sepsis has recently increased at the national level (2011: 1,835 with a death rate of 3.7/100,000 persons; 2014: 2,503 with a death rate of 4.9/100,000; 2016: 3,596 with a death rate of 7.0/100,000; 2018: 4,656 with a death rate of 9.1/100,000) [6].…”
