B‐cell intestinal lymphoma with Mott cell differentiation in a 1‐year‐old miniature Dachshund

Abstract: A 1-year-old intact female miniature Dachshund was presented with hematochezia, vomiting, and diarrhea of more than 1-week duration. An abdominal mass was palpated, which at exploratory surgery was found to be a 7-cm-long thickened section of ileum. The thickened ileum was resected. Impression smears revealed numerous small- to medium-sized lymphocytes, with a smaller number of cells resembling Mott cells. The Mott-like cells contained multiple pale vacuoles that were positive for periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) in… Show more

“…6,16,24 These cases primarily involved the gastrointestinal tract and lymph nodes 6,16,24 ; a single case had multiple nodules in spleen, liver, and lung. 6,16,24 In contrast, the gastrointestinal tract was not affected in the ferret in the current report; however, marked splenomegaly, generalized lymphadenomegally, and scattered white nodules in the liver were present. Benign plasma cell neoplasms in dogs and cats are usually irregularly positive for lambda and kappa light chains.…”

“…Furthermore, three cases of gastrointestinal Mott cell tumor have been previously reported in veterinary medicine (11,12,13). Signet ring cell adenocarcinoma of the canine stomach is characterised by a diffuse infiltration of signet ring tumour cells in the gastric wall.…”

“…Neoplastic cells with Russell bodies may be observed in diffuse lymphomas, such as lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma and lymphoplasmacytoid lymphoma [3,14]. Canine and ferret lymphomas with Russell body inclusions are considered to be a unique histological type and are designated "lymphoma with Mott cell differentiation" [7,13]. Marginal zone B cells are suggested as their presumed normal counterparts, but neither histological nor immunohistochemical evidence has been presented [4].…”
