Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086 limits the recurrence of Clostridium difficile-Induced colitis following vancomycin withdrawal in mice

Abstract: BackgroundRecently, we found that the probiotic strain Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086 (GanedenBC30) improved indices of Clostridium difficile (C. difficile)-induced colitis in mice (Fitzpatrick et al., Gut Pathogens, 2011). Our goal was to determine if BC30 could also prevent the recurrence of C. difficile-induced colitis in mice, following initial treatment with vancomycin. During study days 0 through 5, mice were treated with antibiotics. On day 6, the C. difficile strain VPI 10463 was given by oro-gastric … Show more

“…Quite a number of species of Clostridium can be pathogenic and have been correlated with colitis, enteritis, and food poisoning. [34][35][36][37] The fact that Clostridium was enriched in Vdr À/À fecal stool therefore potentially increased the risks for gut disorders. Alistipes, Odoribacter, and Eggerthella were altered in the cecal stool of Vdr -/-mice.…”

“…The composition of the liquid diet and the pectin content were the same as the product (Hine E-gel; Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory) used for human enteral feeding. As described in Study 1, 0.1 mL of ICG solution was administered at around 09:00 and fecal pellets were subsequently collected for 8 h under withdrawal of food and water, with recording of collection times and scores for fecal consistency (Score 0, normal; Score 1, loose stool; Score 2, loose/some diarrhea; Score 3, diarrhea) (Fitzpatrick et al 2012).…”

“…One brand included the species Bacillus coagulans which holds promise as an intestinal probiotic to prevent Clostridium difficile colitis [13] and for its immunomodulatory effects [14]. All were expected to grow on the blood agar.…”
