Bactericidal and Cytotoxic Properties of Silver Nanoparticle Synthesized from Root Extract of Asparagus Racemosus

Abstract: To evaluate the bactericidal, and cytotoxicity properties of silver nanoparticles synthesized from root extract of Asparagus racemosus. The physical properties of these nanoparticles were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), XRD and UVVis spectrophotometric analysis. The biochemical properties were assayed by antibacterial study, cytotoxicity assay using cancer cell line. The formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by UV-VIS spectroscopic analysis… Show more

“…Similar study results from earlier researchers also show that silver nanoparticles synthesized from plants can effectively kill cancer cells at lower concentrations [15]- [18]. The possible mode of the activity of silver nanoparticles on cancer cells has been reported by various researchers, that is, the created oxidative stress leads to depletion of GSH and induction of ROS, LPO, SOD and catalase in a dose dependent manner [16]- [18].…”

“…The possible mode of the activity of silver nanoparticles on cancer cells has been reported by various researchers, that is, the created oxidative stress leads to depletion of GSH and induction of ROS, LPO, SOD and catalase in a dose dependent manner [16]- [18]. This stress causes interruption of ATP synthesis and mitochondrial damage, resulting in genotoxicity [22].…”

“…In particular, Thymol is a marker compound of Genus Thymus and possesses the great anticancer activities on different cell lines but possesses cytotoxicity against HeLa cell in a concentration-dependent manner [63,64] and intestinal cells line [65]. Similarly, Shatavarin IV from A. racemosus possesses significant anticancer activity against human breast cancer, human colon adenocarcinoma, and human kidney carcinoma cell lines [66]; silver nanoparticles from A. racemosus shows cytotoxicity effect against ovarian cancer cell line [67]; and crude root extract shows cytotoxicity against lung cancer cells [68]. A preliminary screening of leaf extracts of M. koenigii exhibited significant anticarcinogenic effects on inhibiting the growth of breast cancer cell line [69] and girinimbine (a carbazole alkaloid) isolated from M. koenigii shows good antiproliferative effects against lung cancer cells [70].…”

“…Due to their withstanding ability to harsh process conditions, inorganic metal oxides have been paid much attention to by researchers [5]. Silver is one of the important members of the metals used for synthesizing NPs, and many plant extracts have shown to be useful in biosynthesis of silver NPs [6,12,13].…”
