“…It is noteworthy here that sodium butyrate can increase the expression of vimentin, a protein involved in the killing of bacterial pathogens, resulting in the antimicrobial effect against Salmonella Enteritidis ( Gupta et al, 2021 ). Although the curcumin, monolaurin, carvacrol and other ECs tested here have been shown to exert immunomodulatory and/or antimicrobial effects in chickens ( Liu et al, 2016 ; Fortuoso et al, 2019 ; Szott et al, 2020 ; Chen et al, 2021 ; Allaoua et al, 2022 ; Li et al, 2022 ), the present study did not reveal such beneficial effects for these compounds. This is likely because of the cell-based macrophage-focused in vitro model being employed in the present study for screening ECs and further investigations are certainly warranted to understand the in vivo immunological and antimicrobial effects of the ECs tested here using chicken infection model of NE ( Shojadoost et al, 2012 ).…”

“…GML was reported to be able to reduce pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli and maintain intestinal bacterial homeostasis. Chen et al. (2021) reported 1% GML and a complex disinfectant (0.5 + 0.025% lactic acid) can powerfully inactivate Samonella on chicken breast.…”

“…The main organic component of BV is acetic acid, a commonly used organic acidifying agent. Organic acids have been used in poultry diets for decades, positively impacting broilers' physiology, production status, and laying hens ( Beier et al, 2019;Adewole et al, 2021;Chen et al, 2021). BV has also been widely applied in agriculture, health care, environmental sanitation, and medicine (Wang et al, 2018;Guo et al 2020).…”
