Bacteriological and environmental characterisation of the water quality in the Danube River Basin in the Galati area of Romania

Abstract: In order to contribute with date to the Danube River Basin which is a prime European waterway, this analysis was carried out on the one hand to investigate the possibilities of sanitary risks that are incurred by the riverside population as they are engaged in professional recreational activities that impose a direct contact between man and water, that is intensely developed along the aquatic system and on the other hand to indicate a clear cut picture of the final level of coliforms and Escherichia coli that … Show more

“…These values were closed to the average values reported from previous studies (ICEM, 2007;Truong, 2012) for some sites of the Red River but much lower than the average values from urban rivers e.g. the Nhue river in Hanoi city (TC: 106,600 MPN.100ml -1 ; FC: 49,200 MPN.100ml -1 ); and were lower than the ones of some rivers in the World such as the Hindon river (India) (Yadav & Mishra, 2014), or the Danube river (Romania) (Ajeagah et al, 2012).…”

“…For faecal coliforms, the lowest pollution (4.5 × 10 2 colony-forming unit (CFU)/mL) was recorded in July, while the highest value (20 × 10 3 CFU/mL) in August. Maximum E. coli pollution was recorded in September (6.4 × 10 3 CFU/mL) [152].…”

“…An industrial area of the Danube, near Galati town (rkm 155-158), was investigated from a microbiological point of view for a period of four months, from June to September 2010 [152]. The lowest value for total coliforms of 4.5 × 10 2 MPN/mL was measured in July, while the highest value of 2 × 10 4 MPN/mL in August.…”
