Bacteriological quality and antibiogram study of bacteria from "suya" and smoked fish (Clarias gariepinus) in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, Nigeria

Abstract: Introduction"suya" and smoked fish are cherished food delicacies in Nigeria, but can be a source of dissemination of Multi-drug Resistant (MDR) bacteria. Moreover, there are limited studies on these MDR bacteria from Dutsin-Ma. Therefore, this study examined the bacteriological qualities and antibiogram profiles of bacteria in these foods from this area in Nigeria.MethodsTwenty samples of each of "suya" and smoked fish were collected from the study areas and microbiologically analyzed. Total viable count, coli… Show more

“…Previous studies in Nigeria have been centered on analyzing the prevalence of multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa from clinical environments and abattoir/industrial wastewater effluents. 9 , 11-15 However, to the best of our knowledge there is scanty information on prevalence of antibiotic resistant P. aeruginosa from residential sewage in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, Nigeria. Improper disposal of sewage has been an issue of great concern in developing countries including Nigeria, with Dustsin-Ma town (in Katsina state) as a focal point.…”

“…The presence of Bacillus species in the suya samples may be due to contamination from long exposure to air during hawking as reported by Adesoji et al [11] and this air might have polluted with different types of microorganisms. The presence of Bacillus cereus is of public health importance because it is frequently associated with cases of food poisonings as reported by Agwa et al [12] and Osman et al [6].…”
