Ballistic vests for police officers: using clothing comfort theory to analyse personal protective clothing

Abstract: Police officers' clothing needs were analysed related to ballistic vests and ballistic vest aspects that influenced wearer comfort were identified. Branson and Sweeney's Clothing Comfort Model served as a framework to assess eight attributes of the person, clothing and environment that were identified in a previous study as possible comfort factors for police officers. Ninety-one police officers in a southeastern city completed the survey to determine their ballistic vest comfort related to the eight selected … Show more

“…Safety attitudes toward safety ethics and safety education scale items were derived from Donald and Canter [19]; negative preconceptions toward occupational risk and high visibility at a crime scene were derived from Cox, Cox, and Zimet [55]; and perceived benefits of professional appearance were derived from Kwon [42]. Functionality and comfort perception items were developed based on the literature relating to police officers' personal protective clothing [56,57]. Lastly, the item of HVSA-wearing behavior was developed to measure the duration of HVSA usage in hours and minutes per month.…”

“…The design method based on comfort theory Barker and Black (2009) investigated the needs of police officer clothing based on clothing comfort theory. Researchers for this study attempted to address more of the attributes from a physical dimension of clothing system, fit, and properties, than the social-psychological dimension.…”

“…Rutherford- Black and Khan (1995) and Black and Cloud (2008) evaluated police bicycle officers' satisfaction with the physical aspects of their patrol uniforms using 18 word pairs and 25 word pairs, respectively. Barker and Black (2009) used a 13-item scale to investigate selected comfort aspects of police officers' standard issue ballistic vests. In a subsequent study, Barker, Black, and Cloud (2010) used eight word pairs to compare officers' perceptions of the comfort performance of a standard issue ballistic panel with their perceptions of an experimental ballistic panel for insertion in ballistic vests.…”
