Barbed micro-spikes for micro-scale biopsy

Abstract: Single-crystal silicon planar micro-spikes with protruding barbs are developed for micro-scale biopsy and the feasibility of using the micro-spike as a micro-scale biopsy tool is evaluated for the first time. The fabrication process utilizes a deep silicon etch to define the micro-spike outline, resulting in protruding barbs of various shapes. Shanks of the fabricated micro-spikes are 3 mm long, 100 µm thick and 250 µm wide. Barbs protruding from micro-spike shanks facilitate the biopsy procedure by tearing of… Show more

“…(16,(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37) 3D electrodes are expected to approach the target cells in the retina more closely than 2D electrodes. Also, the flexible polyimide substrate is adapted for conformal attachment to the spherical structure of the eye.…”

“…The tool has a diameter of Ø10 mm and height of 1.8 mm. Byun et al [63] proposed a barbed needle for micro biopsy made by MEMS technologies. Needle insertion experiments showed that 3 [N] force [64] is needed to penetrate soft tissue which is difficult to achieve with AP in a medical micro robot.…”

“…The dimensions of the handling bodies are 1.5 mm long, 2.2 mm wide and 500 µm thick. The dimensions are decided based on comprehensive dimensional optimization study [5]. The experimental value for the critical buckling force of the micro spike is 1.3 N and the in-plain directioal bending force is 0.9 N, and the expected penetration force is 223 mN.…”

“…In order to overcome these limitations, we propose the use of micro spike with barb for the minimally invasive tissue sampling [5]. Barbs protruding from the micro spike shanks facilitate the biopsy procedure by tearing off the samples from target tissue and retaining them.…”
