Barriers to Implementation of Real-Time Optimization Technology

Abstract: The SPE Real Time Optimization Technical Interest Group conducted a survey of its members earlier this year to learn more about the barriers to implementation of this technology. Understanding the barriers better will allow us to focus on the more important issues. The survey was in two parts. The first asked about the overall process of getting from data to decisions and action. The second focused on the usage of technical and business tools. This paper summarizes the resul… Show more

“…It may be possible to confirm communication as follows: (1) first, shut in tubing, (2) continue to inject gas into annulus, (3) once the pressures equalize, bleed down the annulus as quickly as possible, then (4) observe tubing pressure. If tubing pressure drops with casing pressure, this confirms communication exists.…”

“…For this to occur, a variety of related tasks must be accomplished. These include: (1) injecting as deeply as possible, (2) lifting the well from a single point of injection, (3) injecting under stable, steady-state conditions, (4) injecting the optimal amount of gas for the given production based on individual well performance, (5) minimizing back pressure and (6) allocating injection gas amongst a population of wells in the most resource efficient manner possible.…”

“…This is the time spent preparing, cleansing, and refining data that Hite et al (2007) referred to. Our investigations suggest that errors such as this are more common than we would believe, and significant effort is now being expended in this area.…”
