Basic body awareness therapy or exercise therapy for the treatment of chronic whiplash associated disorders: a randomized comparative clinical trial

Abstract: The present trial indicates that BAT led to greater improvements than ET for the patients with chronic WAD. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILATION: Chronic whiplash-associated disorders are disabling and incur great costs to society often through inability to work. Exercise therapy (ET) may alleviate symptoms of chronic WAD. Basic body awareness therapy (BAT) is often a component of multimodal pain rehabilitation programs. In this randomized comparative trial, BAT increased physical functioning and led to greater pain … Show more

“…The characteristics of the subjects in this study, primarily female with mean age of near 40, and NPRS of 4.9/10 are generally comparable with previous large samples in MNP studies. 27,28 The mean duration of approximately 2 years and NDI score of 37/100 suggests these results are most generalizable to those with chronic MNP of moderate pain-related disability. 13 The most comparable published data to these results are those of Pedler and Sterling 29 who identified 4 clusters of people with chronic WAD using sensory hypersensitivity and post-traumatic stress symptoms as the clustering variables in an independent sample.…”

“…Basic Body Awareness Therapy (BBAT) is mostly used within physiotherapy within the Nordic European countries. It has many positive effects such as increased health, self-efficacy, increased use of functional coping strategies and a reduction of musculoskeletal symptoms [9,10]. It has also been shown to reduce posttraumatic stress disorders [11], anxiety, depression [3,12], eating disorders [2], and mental illness [11].…”

“…The results of a meta-analysis including 29 studies showed that different kinds of body awareness therapies have positive effects on long-term pain (Courtois et al, 2015). For patients suffering from whiplash-associated disorders, BBAT was superior to exercise therapy in terms of pain, social and physical function (Seferiadis et al, 2016). In patients with long-term pain, BBAT produced greater improvement in both physical and mental health compared with traditional physiotherapy treatment (Malmgren-Olsson et al, 2001).…”
