Basic Study of Both-Sides Retrodirective System for Minimizing the Leak Energy in Microwave Power Transmission

Abstract: In the beam-type microwave power transmission system, it is required to minimize the interference with communication and the influence on the human body. Retrodirective system that re-radiates a beam in the direction of arrival of a signal is well known as a beam control technique for accurate microwave power transmission. In this paper, we newly propose to apply the retrodirective system to both transmitting and receiving antennas. The leakage to the outside of the system is expected to minimize self-converge… Show more

“…Recently in Japan, a new retrodirective method has been proposed for more effective narrow-beam WPT. It was named the bothsides retrodirective system for minimizing the leak energy [35]. In the conventional hardware retrodirective system, the phase conjugate circuits were adapted only at the transmitting array antenna, and the beacon signal from a target usually becomes a plane wave after propagation to the transmitting antenna.…”

“…For power beaming with high intensity, the beam forming is most important to reduce spillover power, not only from the viewpoint of transmission efficiency, but also from the viewpoint of radio interference. Research was conducted on the aperture distribution to maximize transmission efficiency [14] and on low-leakage beamforming based on Gaussian beams [15], [16]. Design of power amplifiers [17] and simplification of power feeding circuits [18] during sidelobe reduction was also proposed.…”

“…Some of the authors previously proposed a both-side retrodirective system to dynamically minimize spillover in real-world situations [21], [22]. Retrodirective systems typically re-radiate power signals in the direction of arrival by inputting the received pilot signals into the phase conjugate circuit of each antenna element [23], [24].…”
