Batch Adsorption Study and Kinetic Profile of Cr(VI) Using Lumbang (Aleurites moluccana)-Derived Activated Carbon-Chitosan Composite Crosslinked With Epichlorohydrin

Abstract: Batch adsorption of toxic Cr(VI) ion from an aqueous solution using lumbang (Aleurites moluccana) activated carbon-chitosan composite crosslinked with epichlorohydrin as an adsorbent was investigated. The adsorption experiments were performed at varying pH, agitation time, initial Cr(VI) ion concentration, temperature, and adsorbent dose. At an initial concentration of 60 ppm Cr(VI), the maximum adsorption was observed at pH 3, adsorbent dose of 3 g/L, contact time of 75 min, and temperature of 30 o C. Analysi… Show more

“…Alternatively, the chitosan can be dissolved in acid and then the AC can be added in the form of a powder to generate CS/AC [ 286 , 287 ]. Crosslinking agents, such as glutaraldehyde [ 288 ], genipin [ 289 ] or epichlorohydrin [ 290 ], can be added to generate the composite hydrogels. With this latter approach, the ratio of activated carbon to chitosan can be easily varied [ 291 ], while other additives can be introduced.…”

“…5d). Lower doses adsorbed less Pb (II) since lower amount of the adsorbent has less adsorption sites 20,21 . However, beyond 4 g/L there is a continuous decrease in the percent removal which means that the adsorptive capacity of the adsorbent was not highly utilized due to its aggregation.…”
