Bayesian Methods for Exoplanet Science

Abstract: Exoplanet research is carried out at the limits of the capabilities of current telescopes and instruments. The studied signals are weak, and often embedded in complex systematics from instrumental, telluric, and astrophysical sources. Combining repeated observations of periodic events, simultaneous observations with multiple telescopes, different observation techniques, and existing information from theory and prior research can help to disentangle the systematics from the planetary signals, and offers synergi… Show more

“…Under frequentist metrics one could still consider rejecting all the models presented here, but this argument assumes that both the data and models perfectly capture all noise sources and atmospheric physics. Tactics such as error-bar inflation (as done in studies such as Line et al 2015;Zhang et al 2018;Colón et al 2020) and incorporating models of additional complexity (e.g., see discussion in Gibson 2014;Parviainen 2018) could be used to further reduce these chi-squared values, but could obfuscate our physical interpretation for HAT-P-41b from these data and associated intermodel comparisons. It is important to note that both H 2 O and UV-optical opacity sources are independently required to explain the observations, irrespective of chi-squared tests, as established by our Bayesian model comparisons.…”

“…pyaneti uses the likelihood given by eq. ( 4), but we acknowledge that more general likelihoods exist, in which possible correlated noise between data points is taken into account (see, e.g., Parviainen 2017;Sharma 2017). We also note that for numerical reasons, it is better to treat P(M |D) in a logarithmic way (Appendix A).…”

“…Sidebar is a form of additional menu that is at the edge of a web page or application, sidebar is also used as a menu form for navigation on desktop pages (Islam et al, 2022). Sidebars are usually located to the right or left of site content which contains menu navigation, menu information, icons and shortcuts (Parviainen, 2017). The usage and number of sidebars on the site should consider the usage apart from the various controls and widget options to maintain the balance of each menu.…”
