We report theoretical lifetimes for O II 3p 4 D o , 3p 2 D o and 3d 4 D 1/2, 3/2, 5/2, 7/2 levels, as well as certain other O II low lying levels, calculated using a four component relativistic Configuration Interaction method. The results for the first two terms agree with previously reported theoretical results, thus emphasizing the need for reevaluation of earlier beam-foil experimental studies. Significant LS mixing between 3d 4 P and 3d 4 D 1/2, 3/2, 5/2 levels is shown to affect the corresponding 4 D lifetimes, demonstrating the necessity for a relativistic description even for a system as light as O II. The calculated average lifetime of the 3d 4 D term shows good agreement with a recent experimental measurement.
