Becker’s Melanosis: an Ultrastructural Study

Abstract: Becker’s melanosis is an uncommon condition characterized by hypertrichosis, hyperpigmentation of the epidermis, dermal melanophages and absence of nevus cells. Ultrastructural examination of such a melanotic lesion from a young white man revealed giant melanosomes. In addition, normal-sized melanosomes were found singly in the keratin ocytes of the involved skin. Dermal venules were surrounded by multiple layers of basement membrane.

“…13). Multiple layers of basement membrane have been reported in diabetes (Vracko & Benditt 1974) and many diverse situations (Bhawan & Chang 1979, Gshnait et al 1975, Cooper & Goodman 1974, Bhawan et al 1979b including normal tissues (Friederici etal. 1966,Parakkal 1966.…”

“…Knowledge of the histopathologic and immunohistochemical characteristics in BN skin may be important not only for diagnosis but also to differentiate it from other pigmented disorders. There are many case reports of BN but only a few systematic studies on the histopathologic characteristics of BN 7–10 . Moreover, there has been no report of AR immunohistochemistry in BN patients.…”

“…However, during photocheniotherapy using 8methoxypsoralen, Zaynoun et al, (1977a) did not observe similar changes in pigment cells and granules and it also appears in other instances that the size of melanosomes is probably not the sole determining factor in aggregation; so in preeaneerous melanosis (Hutchinson's freckles), the melanosomes have an average size of 0,165 ± 0,010 X 0.387 ± 0,024/Um and are not aggregated in phagolysosomes (Anton-Lamprecht et al 1971), In the pigmented marks of Albright's syndrome, the melanosomes of small size also remain unexpectedly dispersed in the keratinocytes (Frenk 1971). The same phenomenon occurs in the lentigines in Leopard syndrome (Bhawan et al 1976), in nevus spilus (Takahaslu 1976), in the hypermelanotic state of Becker's melanosis (Bhawan & Chang 1979) and in the hyperpigmentation following treatment of brain tumors (Gauthier et al, 1976). Also, in phototoxic pigmentary responses induced by psoralens, an increase in melanosomal size without a consistent increase in the percentage of single melanosomes was observed by Zaynoun et al, (1977b), If there is a striking tendency for small melanosomes to be aggregated, in white skin there is no definite relationship between the intensity of pigmentation and the distribution pattern of melanosomes (Konrad & Wolff 1973), Even if the size of melanosomes mainly influences their distribution • \ Fig.…”
