“…According to Soares et al, dengue is the first reason for encephalitis with normal CSF cellularity in 75% of patients with viral meningitis and encephalitis in a dengue endemic region, followed by Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV1) and mild encephalitis (Soares et al, 2011 ). Neuroimaging of dengue encephalitis yields divergent data, with normal findings in most cases (Baldaçara et al, 2013 ; Madi et al, 2014 ). In case of abnormal neuroimaging findings, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has advantages over cranial computed tomography (CT) in revealing cerebral lesions in dengue encephalitis.…”

“…Encephalopathy caused by dengue fever can be reflected by reduced sensitivity, cognitive impairment, convulsions, and personality and behavior disorders, including acute mania, depression, emotional lability, anxiety, psychosis, and agoraphobia (Rittmannsberger et al, 2010 ; Baldaçara et al, 2013 ; Srivastava et al, 2013 ). In a review reporting cases of dengue fever associated with neurological disorders in 2012, encephalopathy was considered by far the most encountered complication (Oehler et al, 2012 ).…”

“…Treatment with compound 10 reduced DENV-2 loads in several organs of mice, including the central nervous system (CNS), and ameliorated tissue damage due to infection. DENV is not classically considered a neurotropic virus, but it may cause encephalitis in humans (31,32) and in immunosuppressed mice, including A129 Ϫ/Ϫ and AG129 Ϫ/Ϫ mice. Here we demonstrated that compound 10 was also able to prevent DENV dissemination to and replication in the CNS of A129 mice, suggesting that this compound may cross the blood-brain barrier.…”

“…36,39 But, the analysis was considered normal in the other two reports. 27,42 Brain imaging studies such as computed tomography [25][26][27]34,35,41 and magnetic resonance imaging 32,33,36,38 in most reports were normal. Metabolic derangements, including elevated liver enzymes, 24,25 electrolyte abnormalities, 27 vasculitis with capillary leak, and fluid extravasations, were postulated.…”
