Behavior of Spot Segregation in Continuously Cast Blooms and the Resulting Segregated Band in Oil Pipe Steels

Abstract: Microscopic dendritic morphology and spot segregation in continuously cast round blooms produced by different intensities of In-mold ElectromagneticStirring (M-EMS) are investigated to elucidate their effect on the segregated bands in the hot-rolled steel pipes. It is found that segregation spots mainly exist in the center equiaxed crystal zone of round blooms. The ratio of the equiaxed crystal zone area (E.R.) increases with the increase of the M-EMS intensity. Moreover, the ratio of the total segregation spo… Show more

“…At the endpoint of solidification, the cavity caused by solidification shrinkage needs to be filled by the liquid phase. However, the corresponding The central segregation defect of the two billet samples selected in this paper is mainly spot segregation, which is spot-like on the cross section and V-shaped on the vertical section and is mainly formed in the central equiaxed crystal zone of the CC billet [24]. During the CC process, the segregated solute is concentrated to the center with the solidification process of the billet.…”

“…The existence of the maximum positive Pearson correlation coefficient and similar HMP indicates that the central segregation is mainly affected by the equiaxed crystal zone width at the hysteretic position and the central segregation degree will be increased with the equiaxed crystal zone width increases. “…As shown in Figure 7, the phase transformation temperature of Steel 1 was obviously lower than that of Steel 2. Mn is an austenite stabilizing element and can reduce Ar3, so the Ar3 in a rich-Mn region is lower than that in a poor-Mn region [21]. As temperature decreases, proeutectoid ferrite preferentially nucleates in the poor-Mn dendrites.…”

“…To better serve in the extreme high temperature, high pressure, and wet hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) environment, higher quality requirements are put forward for the oil pipe steel, especially its raw material, continuous casting round bloom [2]. The shrinkage porosity and spot segregation defects in round bloom are difficult to eliminate through hot rolling and heat treatment, which will cause the formation of inhomogeneity structure in the final oil pipe product, resulting in the early failure due to sulfide stress corrosion (SSC) [3]. Therefore, it is extremely important to effectively control the shrinkage porosity and spot segregation in the continuously cast round bloom of oil pipe steel.…”
