Behavior of Surfactant Mixtures at Solid/Liquid and Oil/Liquid Interfaces in Chemical Flooding Systems

Abstract: The aim of the project is to develop a knowledge base to help the design of enhanced processes for mobilizing and extracting untrapped oil. We emphasize evaluation of novel surfactant mixtures and obtaining optimum combinations of the surfactants for efficient chemical flooding EOR processes. In this regard, an understanding of the aggregate shape, size and structure is crucial since these properties govern the crude oil removal efficiency. During the three-year period, the adsorption and aggregation behavior … Show more

“…Much work has been done to understand the physicochemical interactions that govern the formation of adsorbed colloidal layers on surfaces or surface colloids (solloids). The traditional methods, namely, surface tension measurement, study of adsorption isotherms, viscosity measurements, zeta potential measurements, wettability, and calorimetric techniques, , have led to a better understanding and characterization of polymers and surfactants at interfaces. However studies regarding the dynamics of polymeric materials have been hard to come by as the experimental determination of the conformation and orientation of adsorbed macromolecules in real time is a difficult task.…”

“…In a single surfactant system, the adsorption isotherm usually reaches a plateau when surfactant equilibrium concentration reaches the CMC. This is as a result of pseudo phase separation model of micelle formation since monomer concentration of surfactant will be constant above the CMC [29]. Al-Sulaimani et al [22] studied residual oil recovery through injection of biosurfactant, chemical surfactant and their mixture.…”
