Behavioral interactions between the actinian Tealia piscivora (Anthozoa: Actiniaria) and the asteroid Dermasterias imbricata

Abstract: 1985. Behavioral interactions between the actinian Tealia piscivora (Anthozoa: Actiniaria) and the asteroid Dermasterias imbricata. Can. J . Zoo1 . 63: 192 1 -1929. Interactions between the sea anemone Tealia piscivora and the sea star Dermasterias imbricata have been studied in the laboratory and in subtidal habitats. Dermasterias causes the release of the pedal disk of smaller T. piscivora. The response is specific. Nineteen other sea stars did not cause release; four other species of Tealia did not respo… Show more

“…Our research, like that of Weightman and Arsenault (2002), was performed at Bamfield Marine Station and published in the Canadian Journal of Zoology. The actinian Urticina (formerly Tealia) piscivora releases its pedal disc from the substratum when brought into contact with its asteroid predator Dermasterias imbricata, but shows no such response to 19 other nonpredatory species (Elliott et al 1985). Similarly, the actinian Stomphia didemon (formerly Actinostola sp.)…”

“…Following receipt of Dalby and Elliott's comment highlighting a number of articles we had presumably overlooked, we repeated our database search, again using a variety of keywords: only Edmunds et al (1976), Elliott et al (1985), and Weightman and Arsenault (2002) were found. The study by Edmunds et al (1976) examined the response of 11 species of anemones to a single nudibranch predator.…”

“…Although interesting, this study did not examine whether these anemones were capable of predator classification. In contrast, the study by Elliott et al (1985) examined the defensive behaviour of 2 anemone species elicited by contact with 20 sea star species, as well as the response of 4 other anemone species to contact with the sea star Dermasterias imbricata. This study provides some evidence of predator-classification abilities in anemones (see the comment below) and would have been informative had it been included in our research note.…”
