The passive and transpassive films on a Ni electrode have been studied by UV-visible potential-modulated reflectance (PMR) spectroscopy over a wide range of pH--l-14--and polarization potentials. PMR is a very sensitive in situ technique, although an established interpretation theory is still lacking for the results obtained with anodic oxide films. Here we follow the criterion that the PMR maxima of the films correspond to absorption edges of compounds present in them. The PMR results indicate that NiO is present in the passive and transpassive film, both in acid and alkaline media. Two higher Ni oxides are also present in the transpassive film in alkaline media, but they could not be identified, owing to the existing confusion about bulk Ni higher oxides.

Der Reaktionsmechanismus im Edisonakkumulator wird neu formuliert nach Ni(OH)2wie NiOOH (β‐NiOOH) kristallisieren im C 6‐Typ; β‐NiOOH hat Arnfelt‐Struktur, Ni(OH)2 „aufgerauhte Netzebenen”︁ und blättchenförmige Ausbildung der Kristallite. Der Ladevorgang ist nicht die Umkehr des Entladevorgangs. Beim Laden tritt NiO2 · xH2O als Primärprodukt auf, aus dem durch Zer‐setzung oder durch Reaktion mit Ni(OH)2 β‐NiOOH entsteht. Bei geeignet geführter Entladung macht sich Ni3O2(OH)4 durch eine Potentialstufe bemerkbar. Ni3O2(OH)4 kann sowohl aus der Reaktion 2 NiOOH + Ni(OH)2 = Ni3O2(OH)4 stammen, als auch durch Zersetzung aus β‐NiOOH gebildet werden. Beim längeren Stehen des Edisonakkumulators muß sich die Zersetzung von β‐NiOOH nach Ni3O2(OH)4 in einer Abnahme der Kapazität auswirken.
