Beneficial effects of N‐acetylcysteine and cysteine in stunned myocardium in perfused rat heart

Abstract: 1 The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of three sulphydryl (SH) compounds, Nacetylcysteine (NAC), cysteine (Cys) and cystamine, on functional recovery and ventricular arrhythmias (VF) in stunned myocardium in the isolated perfused heart of the rat. 2 Hearts (n = 7-8 per group) were perfused by the Langendorff procedure for 20min to stabilize and then assigned to one of five groups: saline, sham, NAC, Cys and cystamine. After the stabilizing period, the drugs (at 3.6,uMmin-1) or their vehicle… Show more

“…Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion Similar results for preconditioning have been reported in has been shown to result in contractile dysfunction, rabbit and rat hearts [86,125,126]. Such similarities bearrhythmias, loss of adrenergic pathways, changes in gene tween the beneficial effects of ischemic preconditioning expression, apoptosis as well as necrotic cell death.…”

“…The endothelium, in the phase of cellular swelling, no-reflow phenomenon and, possibly, more substantial changes, cannot produce the endothelium-derived relaxing factor (nitric oxide). Hypothetically, the role can be taken over by the positive action of the -SH groups of NAC [6,[15][16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…Langendorff technique was used for isolated heart perfusion as described in details previously [21,22]; the rat was given of heparin (1000 iu/kg, i.p.) 60 min and pentobarbital sodium (40 mg/kg, i.p.)…”
